 So This Is Great Britain?
Listening to 'So This Is Great Britain?' you can almost instantly tell that the Holloways are a band that love to have fun and enjoy making their music and playing it. And since they first met in a pub in Holloway Road, (guess were they got their name from), two years ago that is exactly what they've been doing. Especially so this summer, with a few rather legendary sell out gigs, including one in Sheffield where they ended up playing a second gig on the roof of their touring van after too many young fans weren't let into the venue. Their live performances have made them one of the best new acts in Britain at the minute, earning them a record deal with TVT, but how good do they sound on CD? The answer is, quite simply, very good.

Like the majority of British indie rock acts around at the minute they are obviously going to be compared to the Libertines, but for once the comparisons are justified. The reasons behind these claims are quite obvious, the dual frontmen of Alfie Jackson and Rob Skipper, similar to Barat and Doherty, not just in line up but lyrics, songwriting and vocal capabilities also. However, while the Libertines lived in an idealised world of Albion Britain the Holloways choose a more gritty realistic Britain, hence the question mark in the title of the album. This view of the nation is very clear in the opening track, Great Britain, which tells us of the problems with celebrity culture in our country today, but also alerts us the Alfie Jackson's sly and cynical wit. Not only this but his acute political views, seen in the lines, "We'll soon be state Britain, If our best friends have their way, Just another star upon the flag across the wave."

Their sound also isn't completely like the Libertines either. Although Babyshambles would be considered by to have ska influences it never really showed much during Pete's Libertine's days, but the Holloways are different in that a lot of their music contains ska and reggae influences, not to mention the odd bit of calypso in the guitar riffs as well. But the different genres, including a bit of gypsy folk thrown in for good measure, all blend together seamlessly to create a stunning, original sound.

While the Holloways have a clear view of the social and moral wrongs in society today, it doesn't keep them from writing about less important things like, for example, not being able to dance. This is the focus of one of the stand-out tracks of the album, Two Left Feet. With a ridiculously catchy rhythm and chorus, not to mention a fiddle, this song will make you want to dance no matter how bad you actually are at it. There is also Generator, another stand out track from the album that tells us of the healing power of music set to jangly guitar riffs, that will leave you longing for summer again now that it is getting colder and darker.

Not all the songs are upbeat, there is one slower track on the record, Most Lonely Face, which shows the more versatile side of the band and comes at a point in the album when a much needed change of pace will be welcomed by most. Not only this but it is one of the best songs of heartbreak written this year from a band that, from the rest of the album, it seems know nothing of sadness.

The result of the past two years for these four young men is an immensely enjoyable record that is great fun to listen to. And even though it is filled with political messages and social commentary you won't find yourself feeling down due to the negative portrayal of our country, but rather you'll feel uplifted as it doesn't really matter if you live in a rubbish place, as long as bands like this are making records like these.
