You've probably already heard about Football Manager, the phenomenally popular PC management sim which has constantly improved with every release even if to the neutral eye there is nothing new. Whereas this is a game full of menus, there's so much depth that it is not unknown for people to put in full 12 hour stints before deciding that the blood pouring out of their eyes is probably a sign of lasting damage and they should try and salvage their failing eyesight, even if the next game of the season is the playoff final.

Thankfully, this PSP port is still as good as the PC version. But due to the smaller capacity however, some things have been removed from the game - there are less player stats, manager comments are gone and when you start the next season all the records of the previous, such as the tables are erased. These though are not massive omissions, they were merely added to the game to make it feel more real on the PC, but playing without them does not affect the game on the PSP greatly. The hub of the game overviews the latest news, transfer rumours and injuries, and there is aslo a display of your past four results, the next four games and a snapshot of your position in the league.

So what makes this game so good to play? Difficult to say as there is no music, sounds (except a little click for menu actions which can be turned off anyway) and it has the looks of versions as far back as 99/00. What will keep you hooked is the faithful recreation of real life, and the hunt for the next Argentinian wonderkid. And the hunt is easy, as Sports Interactive have made navigation wonderfully easy even for newcomers, using the R and L buttons for forward and back aswell.

" ..Sports Interactive have made navigation wonderfully easy.."

Of course, you obviously want success with your team from the get-go whether it be Chelsea or Stockport but the board will think differently. For these two teams, the former's goals are 'success in all areas' with a hefty transfer budget of 50 million. For the second, to 'battle bravely against relegation' is the order of the day, with a paltry transfer budget, if any, making those Bosmans more valuable. This can test a player's real abilities, as taking charge of Chelsea is the easy way out for this game. Take control of a smaller team, and the feeling of not getting relegated can be placed more on your ability as a tactician rather than effectively fielding a World XI.

So its lighter in terms of depth than its PC counterpart, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. The game does not have to frequently access the UMD, meaning that loading times are incredibly fast and that the battery lasts a lot longer than most games can achieve. The feeling of success is just as good as it is on the PC and 360 and the slight omissions that had to be made do not make the game unplayable.

The handheld port is therefore a worthwhile investment for the footy fan, and even as a newbie to the management sim. Whereas the graphics are as basic as you can get, and there is no sound, the sheer longevity of the game more than makes up for it. Now back to my game and the 2013/2014 season...
