In a press conference, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced that the DS has sold 5 million units in Japan since its launch 14 months ago, breaking a new record.
"Selling 5 million units in less than 14 months means DS is the fastest among any game machines ever launched in Japan to hit that level.
To achieve this rapid growth, we were required not only to go after frequent game players, but to reel back people who had left games and to make video games enjoyable for those who had not played games at all."
The DS has been enjoying very healthy sales since the launch of Nintendogs, and sales were reinvigorated due to the launch of the online Mario Kart DS, when the DS began flying off the shelves. The DS has been on retail shelves from the end of November, 2004.
