 Discovery - Daft Punk
Daft Punk's latest album ‘ Humans after all' was released earlier this year, so to catch up on the Daft Punk knowledge, we take a look at their critically acclaimed 2001 album ‘Discovery'.

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo had a somewhat large challenge to overcome the brilliance of their first collective effort, but to no avail Discovery performed . Discovery is Daft Punk's second full album, and was seen by many (especially fans) as a very alternative collection in comparison to the funk house style associated with ‘Homework'. Discover offers a more instantly accessible album, which is full of good pop like tunes with great guitar riffs, which is in essence a CD crammed full of mid 80's underground disco tunes, and it all blends together brilliantly creating one great journey.

1 – One More Time

A very upbeat track which offers everybody something to dance to. With a fantastic bass and beat which provides a superb backing track, but genuinely this track disappoints where lyrics are involved, by offering a much repeated three and half minutes. In all honesty though Daft Punk isn't about the lyrics, it's about the music, and although you may tire from hearing “One more time” one time too many, it simply cannot annoy, when on the dance floor. The Digitalised voice from Romanthony offers charm and this track often brings a smile to my face, as it's just a pure celebration of life.

2 – Aerodynamic

Moody, this track begins with a haunting sound of church bells, but then turns so quickly into an amazing joyful mix of tunes and bass. The guitar work blazes into an amazing fast paced funk solo section, over 30 seconds long, which you cant help but jam too. This then effortlessly blends back into the mix (mentioned before) offering a real tune you will want to keep hearing. The track trails off towards the end, but comes to a smooth finish with a subtle loop of keyboard joy.

3 – Digital Love

Dreaming is a thing of beauty, this track has a story, of two lovers, but alas it's just a dream. The lyrics are very clichéd, but it works, and offers emotion in musical form, which will touch the listener. Digital Love shows a different side to Daft Punk, especially from there ‘Homework' days, this is one of the more mature tracks, not offering just a simple repeated sample sound; proving that the French artists can graft good ideas into great singles, and from this point on the album goes on from strength to strength.

4 – Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

Harder Better Faster Stronger is Discovery's answer to ‘Homework's' excellent 'Da Funk' , providing strong beats and variable baselines overlaid with their signature robotic chants. The percussion work also featured on this track also adds a nice twist on the usual instrumental work used. This track is an enthusiastic one, which offers encouragement, and persuasion through their electric sound which makes this track a clever little groove wrapped around their computerized seduction.

5 – Crescendolls

An electric sound beacons the beginning of Crescendolls, which is also another welcomed pop type track. This like ‘One more time' seems to be enthusiastically celebrating life, with its upbeat tempo, and overall positive vibe, but One More Time is clearly the stronger track, of the two.

6 – Nightvision

A slow track which trundles along nicely and is quiet relaxing. This track is nothing special or particularly anything bad. Resulting in the most average track on the album, due to its bland nature.

7 – Superheroes

Cool and smart with a drum roll of a start, which flows into a happy heavy bass line, with superhero sounds and lyrics, this is funky and fun track, which suffers from a bit of repetition, but on a whole is yet again another loud and fantastic addition.

8 – High Life

Upbeat and joyful High Life is jumpy and exciting throughout, with a good strong backing track. This makes you want to dance!

9 – Something about Us

A relaxing start sets up another great addition to the album, ‘Something about us' is a seductive track with slow lyrics and beats, which really sets the pace for the song. Nice, simple, yet romantic lyrics make this a beautiful track, which is the epitome of chill out.

10 – Voyager

Voyager is an excellent transition of great techno beats which eventually blends into a superb h arder more sophisticated tune, with a sharp edge which adds to make a modern melancholy of disco. A fantastic addition to the album which blends well with other tracks.

11 – Veridis Quo

A simple track which uses some nice samples and sounds to create a mellow blend which makes Veridis Quo a rather bland but somewhat appealing chill out track.

12 – Short Circuit

A funky start to Short Circuit quickly becomes a heavy deep sound which unfortunately becomes repeated and annoying, this results in Short Circuit becoming one of the albums weaker points. Towards the end the track does mellow out, and becomes indefinite chill out music, but yet again this is ruined by what I can describe as a blur to the sound, ruining further an already disappointing track.

13 – Face to Face

Face to Face is a superb addition to the album, which stands out towards the end of the album due to its heavy vocal presence. This track has some unique sounds, especially in the background which really gel well with the rest of the track, to make a superb track, with great lyrics!

14 – Too Long

As ironic as this may sound ‘Too Long' is just that (nearly ten minutes), and it's disappointing that this fantastic journey of an album ends on such a disappointing low point. With repeated and somewhat annoying lyrics, fortunately do stop after an abysmal five minutes in. But then we are offered another five minutes of random beats and tunes, a sorry end to a fantastic collection of music.

Discovery is one of the most memorable albums in recent years.
