The 12th Annual National Television Awards @ 1 November 2006 10:35 PM
Sir Trevor McDonald yet again presents the annual National Television Awards, celebrating the best of UK television on BBC One, BBC Two, ITV One, Channel 4 and Five.
The evening awarded the following programs and individuals,
Most Popular Reality Program:
Jack and Kelly Osbourne presented the award for the most popular reality TV show, the nominations being; I'm a Celebrity...Get me out of here!, Big Brother, The Apprentice and Celebrity Big Brother, the winner was:
Big Brother. Pete, this year's winner, Nikki, Davina, and Dermot all came to the stage to accept the award.
Most Popular Actor:
Academy award winner Dame Julie Andrews presented the award for most popular actor, the nominations were; Ross Kemp (Grant) in Eastenders, Matthew Fox (Jack) in Lost, Chris Fountain (Justin) in Hollyoaks, Bradley Walsh (Danny) in Coronation Street, David Tennant (Dr.Who) in Dr.Who, the winner was:
David Tennant for his portrayal as Dr.Who.
Most Popular Newcomer:
The award for most popular newcomer was presented by Anthony Cotton also known as Shaun from Coronation Street, the nominations were; Charlie Clements (Bradley) in Eastenders, Nikki Patel (Amber) in Coronation Street, Jenna Louise Coleman (Jasmine) in Emmerdale and Andrew Moss in Hollyoaks. The winner was:
Charlie Clements as Bradley in BBC One show Eastenders.
Most Popular Entertainment Program:
The nominations were read out by Miss. World 2006 Taťána Kuchařová and were as follows; Strictly Come Dancing (BBC), Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV) , Friday Night with Jonathan Ross (BBC), Dancing on Ice (ITV), and The X Factor (ITV) the winner was:
ITV's singing talent show, The X Factor.
Most Popular Daytime Show:
Boris Johnson presented the award for most popular daytime show, the nominations were as so; The New Paul O'Grady Show (Channel 4), Deal or No Deal (Channel 4), Neighbours (BBC One), and This Morning (ITV) the winner was:
Deal Or No Deal, the award was accepted by two previous winners of the popular Channel 4 show. Noel Edmunds was not present at the show.
Television Landmark Award:
Anthony Stewart Head who plays UK Prime Minister in BBC Comedy show Little Britain presented the award for a landmark in television to fellow Little Britain star David Walliams for his charity documentary on swimming the English Channel for good causes.
Most Popular Factual Program:
The award for most popular factual program was presented by Dragon's Den panellist Peter Jones. The nominations in this category were; Planet Earth (BBC One), Bad Lads Army: Officer Class (ITV), Supernanny (Channel 4), and Top Gear (BBC). The winner in the factual category was:
The BBC Car show Top Gear, the award was accepted by Jeremy Clarkson and James May. Richard Hammond was not present.
Most Popular Actress:
Presented by John Savident, also lovingly known as Fred Elliott of Coronation Street, the nominations were: Billy Piper as Rose Tyler (Dr.Who), Lacey Turner as Stacey Slater (Eastenders), Ursula Holden Gill as Alice Edith Rose Wilson (Emmerdale), Evangeline Lilly as Kate (Lost), Sue Cleaver as Eileen Grimshaw (Coronation Street) the winner was:
Billy Piper for her portrayal as Rose Tyler in BBC show Dr. Who.
Most Popular Quiz:
The award for most popular quiz show was presented by Kirstie and Sophie of Location, Location, Location fame the nominations were; Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (ITV), Have I Got News For You (BBC), Ant & Dec's Gameshow Marathon (ITV), 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4), the winner was:
Ant & Dec's Gameshow Marathon, the award was accepted by Bolton boy, Vernon Kay, as Ant & Dec are on there way to Australia for the latest series of I'm a celebrity..!
Most Popular Drama:
The award for most popular drama was presented by three actors from new BBC show Robin Hood, the nominations were as follows; Bad Girls (ITV), Desperate Housewives (Channel 4), Lost (Channel 4), and Dr.Who (BBC), the winner was:
Dr.Who took the win, proving in a successful night for the show.
Most Popular Light Entertainment Presenter:
Presented by Eastenders' Ruby, the nominations are; Paul O'Grady, Jonathon Ross, Noel Edmonds, Ant & Dec, and Davina McCall. The winner was:
Ant & Dec, this time accepted by Phillips Schofield and Fern Britton.
Most Popular TV Contender:
Michael Barrymore presented the award, and the nominations were; Nikki (Big Brother), Richard Fleeshman (Soapstar Superstar), Chantelle (Celebrity Big Brother), Carol Thatcher (I'm a Celebrity..), and Pete (Big Brother), and the winner was:
A 'shocked' Nikki from Big Brother 20606.
Most Popular Comedy Program:
The award was presented by Friends star David Schwimmer, the nominations in this funny category are; Little Britain, My Family, Will & Grace and The Catherine Tate Show. The winner was:
Special Recognition Award:
This year's special recognition award was awarded to Sir David Attenborough and was presented by the wife of the late Steve Irwin, Terry Irwin. Terry who made her way to the stage in traditional zoo clothing, and receiving a standing ovation for her late husband, after wiping tears away, introduced the award to the 80 year old natural world broadcaster.
Most Popular Serial Drama:
The big one, popularity and ratings collide as Peter Andre and Katie Price presents the award for the UK's most popular serial drama, the nominations of course are; Hollyoaks, Eastenders, Emmerdale, and Coronation Street, the winner was:
BBC One's Eastenders.
