Drop It 'Til It Pops - Hot Club De Paris
As you may be able to tell just from the title of this album, which itself is a parody of a certain rap from Snoop Dogg, are not an overly serious or pretentious band who are interested in silly things like experimentalism or avant garde, thankfully. Instead what they are is a band who make highly energetic jerky guitar rock and sound like a mix between the Futureheads and the Young Knives. They have released their debut album Drop It 'Til It Pops this month on indie label moshi moshi records after releasing two singles previously both of which lack spaces in their name, these being, sometimesitsbetternottostickbitsofeachotherineachotherforeachother and Everyeveryeverything, both names that are going to annoy journalists and radio DJs up and down the country. Obviously this is band who are skillful in the record naming department, so how does their actual music sound and does it match up to the titles?

Shipwreck opens up the album and does so perfectly as it is such an energetic introduction to an uplifting record that is 35 minutes of pure high octane enjoyment. Luckily only two of the tracks on the album are over 3 minutes long, if they all were this sort of length you would run the risk of being exhausted completely just by listening to one track for too long. Clockwork is one of the 3+ minutes songs and you can see that Hot Club de Paris don't excel at writing long songs, but instead are best in short bursts. If you are not fully sure that Hot Club de Paris actually sound like the Futureheads then all you need to do to convince yourself of this fact is listen to Names and Names and Names and then the Futureheads Skip To The End and the comparison should become clear in the very similar guitar riffs.

Unfortunately not all the tracks are as good as the first half of the album, although Bonded By Blood (A Song For Two Brothers) contains no instruments but only human beatboxing as the instrumentation throughout the whole song but because of this sounds very dull and does become quite tedious to listen to by then end because of the poor quality of the vocals and lyrics. Hello I Wrote A Song For You Called "Welcome To The Jungle" which follows it may have an awesome name but unfortunately the track doesn't hold up to the brilliance of the title. Instead it is a song that would sound far more at home on a Decemberists' album than anything by Hot Club de Paris. Luckily there aren't too many slow tracks on the album, as these tracks don't add much to the whole album, in fact they take away from it by slowing the pace of a very fast album down unnecessarily. Another one of these tracks is Your Face Looks All Wrong, however it is followed up by a more characteristically upbeat song, the bands recent single Everyeveryeverything which is an excellent end to the album. It leaves you with the desire to listen to the record again but skip out all the slower tracks, which is exactly what you should do.

Hopefully next time we see a release from Hot Club de Paris they have decided to stick to what they do best, making excellent songs with lightning quick guitar riffs and ridiculous song titles and none of this slow song nonsense. A band with the energy of Hot Club de Paris should never make a song that is even remotely slow as it just ends up sounding strange and is a waste of their energy. The album can be quite exhausting to just listen to but it is something that you will want to do over and over again as Hot Club de Paris are a fun band with no idea of any pretentiousness that is becoming common in music these days.
